Schmidt Paper Roll Hardness testers have been an industry standard tool for the evaluation of roll quality and winding for many years. Available in both automatic recording and non-recording models, these devices allow the mill, converter, or printer to quickly check for common roll defects such as baggy centers or edges, tight edges, and poor winding profiles. Many mills check every roll produced as this test has proven to be a good predictor of roll runability in subsequent operations.
These instruments are inexpensive and easy to operate. The non-recording model L gives the user a simple analog indication of the hardness of the roll at each test point. The recording model LR produces a bar graph which allows the user to automatically produce a roll profile and values are recorded on a strip chart for each point.
