POROLOG MICRO 5000:
POROSITY MEASUREMENT
ON THE PAPER MACHINE
IMPROVE QUALITY, RUNABILITY, REFINING,
COATING, AND SURFACE TREATMENT
The Porolog Micro 5000 provides the papermaker with an immediate indication of porosity as paper is produced "on machine". Easy to justify for grades where porosity is a concern, there are many successful applications where, although the porosity specification itself is unimportant, it has been shown to be an excellent indicator of refining, pressing, machine runability, coating holdout, and size press pickup and penetration.

Because its information is immediately available to the machine crew, the Porolog Micro 5000 can often produce significant savings in terms of better machine productivity and reduced losses from off quality paper.
The Porolog Micro 5000 works by measuring the time required for a fixed volume of air to be pulled through the moving web. The measurement is made through our "soft touch" measurement head which, in addition to the measurement area, incorporates special sealing slots to insure the best air seal and to remove air entrained by the surface roughness of the sheet.
Each measurement, and the time/date taken, is reported on the instrument's own alphanumeric display. Measurement values are sent to the process control system via the instrument's standard RS-232 computer interface or through a 4 - 20ma analog output.
Porolog Micro 5000 is being used on a very wide range of paper grades with widely varying characteristics. The entire instrument is operated by an integrated PLC computer system, which is controlled by our own proprietary software. This system allows the mill to tailor the instrument's range and sensitivity so that it best fits the grades to be measured.

The measuring head for the Porolog Micro 5000 can be mounted almost anywhere that the sheet is dry, taut, and at a constant web angle. The head is built with an automatic retraction system which is tied in with the machine's web break detection system so that it will pull out of the way for threading and start-up and can be configured for full operation without attention from the operator.
Kalamazoo Paper Chemicals has provided this measurement system for use on a wide range of grades including: Coating Base Stock, Cigarette Paper, Sack Kraft, Liner Board, Saturating Base, Photographic Papers, and a variety of Printing, Xerographic, and Packaging grades.
Unlike conventional laboratory spot testing at each "turn-up", the Porolog Micro 5000 allows the user to gather information on sheet quality and process changes on a constant basis. Because of this, it is often possible to detect adverse changes long before a problem might otherwise be detected. The savings from improved quality and better machine runability can be significant!
We believe that Kalamazoo Paper Chemicals has, by far, the most experience in the industry with this type of measurement. Please allow us to discuss the specifics of your application.
